Since 1554, Great Torrington has been holding the May Fair on the first Thursday of May
Great Torrington played a significant role during the Civil War. The Battle of Torrington, in 1646, put the end to the Royal opposition in the West England.
Great Torrington is surrounded by 365 acres of Common land that was granted to the settlement in the 12th century.
